Kettlebell "Holding" the kettlebell arm bar position

I saw in a recent post from strongfirst instagram an example of the bent arm bar, where the focus was on breathing in position. There was a quote saying that gray cook suggests holding the bent arm bar for up to 3 minutes.

I hadn't heard anything like that before. Does the same apply to the regular arm bar? Can one hold that position for greater amounts of time to good effect?
 
The amount of time the position is held is up to the quality and pain-free nature of the position.
I find that 3-5 breaths in those positions get me what I need.

Never hold a position so long that you fatigue and place yourself at risk. And do not hold a position in pain.
