Off-Topic What made you settle down where you did?

Hey StrongFirst,

Obviously most of us have homes or a place where we decided to set up permanent or near permanent shop.

What made you stay where you did? Do you ever wish you took more opportunity to go elsewhere?

Thank you, Adam
I'm originally from New England, Mass and New Hampshire however after a less than awesome freshman year in college I joined the Navy hoping to be stationed in San Diego or overseas however the Navy had a fantastic (sarcastic) program called Home Basing when Clinton was president. The selling point was that you don't need to uproot your family every three years, just stay where you are. So, I have been in the Virginia Beach area for the last 33 years. I like Virginia overall, lots to do and every weekend you can drive a few hours and have a different experience from the beach to the mountains, but I really wanted to get a few years overs seas.

Great question.

I grew up in northern Utah and pursued a degree in hotels while also dreaming of being a pro grappler. I moved to Vegas as it seemed best of both worlds and when I discovered I didn’t have what it takes to make it on the pro grappling scene I got embraced by the city. It’s been a land of immense opportunity for me and I really view it as my home now, been here for 13 years and envision being here for life.

I also hate snow with a passion, never having to shovel or dig my car out is a major plus.

Grew up in upstate NY, lived briefly in Jacksonville, Fla. Do not regret leaving there to head back to NY.

Family, work, Adirondacks, Finger Lakes, 1000 Islands, 4 seasons, not too far driving from a lot of places, take a train to NYC for a weekend, some of the best public schools in the country near me, my kids attend one of them.

Once the kids are grown I'll think about moving.

my college was literally a mile away from the high school I graduated from. I graduated in May and 2 weeks later I’m doing the same drive I did for all of high school.

so when I graduated college, I went the contractor route. I’d take short contracts - 3 to 6 months - and move after each one was done. Lived up and down the east coast for about a decade then headed to the west (skipped the mid-west). Started in New Mexico then Arizona then San Diego and then all the way up the west coast till I got to Seattle. at that point, I met my future wife. And we settled down.

my wife passed away, no kids, but I stay where I am because…I dunno. maybe the whole “objects at rest tend to stay at rest”. Right now I’m blaming it on interest rates. No one will pay what I want for the house. Moving a garage gym would be expensive. Et Cetera.

I’d love to be near the CA ocean again. But damn…that’s expensive

I’ve grown up and lived in Southern Illinois my whole life. Did my degree work online because I was a single dad and my family was in town. Ended up finding work in town as a human resource specialist. We live outside the city so life is quieter and slower where we are which I like. ( a lot of woods around our house)Maybe one day we will move further south out of Illinois would be ideal. But for now this is our home.

I grew up in South Jersey in a town called East Greenwich. Then at age 27 my parents told me to move out, so I moved 15 minutes down the street into Woodbury, NJ.

I like life here and rent a small apartment from a nice landlord. I've always had simple wants but I also don't have a girlfriend, family or pets nor do I really desire them. I could get up and move if I had/wanted too. I've always wanted to check out California just because of the weather and the scenery but with the homeless crisis/violence, I'm not so sure if it's a good idea anymore......

Man, this is the truth. Every now and then I get a hankering to move, but realizing that my mortgage will literally quadruple just makes me stop.

My starter home has become my finisher home lol

You get used to it, the residentially challenged that is. The violence is typically overblown.

I feel boring! I live a few km’s from where I grew up. Got a good job and haven’t left ( started in 99 ). My wife is from a few suburbs away. We live 90 mins south of Sydney. It used to be cheap suburbs by the beach, even cheaper inland. Now it’s almost part of Sydney and ridiculously expensive. Kids will never move out haha

You're not boring. I crave simple, enjoy it brother!

same in Seattle. If you believe the media (or random internet comments), everybody is selling drugs and you’ll be accosted for every second you’re on the sidewalk. I’ve lived here over 10 years in various neighborhoods, I’ve been offered drugs once. Approached by the homeless maybe a half-dozen times?

I went from my parents house - apartment - current house. all within a 15 minute radius drive of each other.
Besides a severe longing to live at least a portion of my year in New Zealand at some point in my life, I would be happy to die in my house (in about 50 years though!)

Middle Earth. I'm mainly saving and investing all of my money so I can build my own Rivendell.

Started life in northern Wisconsin/ Minnesota. Lived there for almost 30 years.
Moved to Austin Texas for a couple years to take advantage of the budding entrepreneur scene there.

After a few years of that we got sick of the whole Texas vibe and moved to New Mexico for better access to the outdoors. As a pleasant side effect we got better weather and family that moved out there as well. Plus green chili.

If I want snow it’s a 20-60 minute drive.

I’m only at 12 mailing addresses.

Same in Albuquerque. News makes it seem like a cartel warzone. Been shot at more times by drunk hunters in the north woods of Wisconsin than any issues I’ve had here.

Well, uh, I get pandhandled constantly on the sidewalk and drugs are prolific lol. But the violence, the violence is overblown. And you do get used to it.

How are you from Wisconsin and able to handle New Mexico green chili?!? I thought people that far north think ketchup is too spicy.
