Kettlebell Geoff Neupert "THE GIANT" ??

I just purchased both The Giant and Strong!. I was offered 50% off Strong! with the purchase of The Giant and I thought that was a no brainer. I am a 42 year old, beat up fire fighter returning to kettlebells after some significant time off. I am a former SFG and I look forward to relearning some technique from the Strong! videos. Im not yet sure which program I'll start with, however I'm leaning the Giant since Geoff states its great for guys my age. Im looking forward to reading through the books. This forum has really been helpful as I get back into the "swing" of things.

I never thought I would love any minimalist program. I tried SS and QD both were ok to me but kept me wanting more variety. I don’t know why the Giant series still hasn’t made me bored 1.5 years after starting it. I’ve almost exclusively ran different variations of the Giant in that time and continue to progress with it in different ways. You can use it as a way to push, or you can almost use it as a routine maintenance program during your more stressful times in life.

Greetings,

I just bought The Giant a month ago.
I have a single 16kg (10RM) and a single 20kg (5RM)
I finished The Giant 3.0 with a single 20kg. And increased my RM from 5RM to 7RM. I consider it a success for me.
And after consulting with Geoff via email, I am continuing with The Giant 3.0 with uneven pairs of 20 and 16 using my STRONG arm (without switching weight between sets - I am sending email to reconfirm this today).

Have anyone here done The Giant with single or uneven pairs before?

P.S: I am a 32yo guy with small build. 170cm and 56kg, hence the "light" 5RM. Looking forward to get the strong and positive aura from everyone here. Many thanks!

I have ran uneven bells. Advice would be don't chase volume at the expense of form. Kinda good advice anyway but especially with uneven bells.

Currently running the Giant 3.0 with a single bell.

Would it be advisable to run the Giant in two week blocks? Two weeks of grinds (clean and press) and two weeks of ballistics (clean and jerk or clean and push press)?

Very sound advice. Yesterday I did the W1D1 workout without changing weight (may God forgive me if I have sinned :D), and I notice when I slacking off with my form the harder bell won't even cleaned properly. So everytime I do the Clean part I have to exert minimum level of power that can clean the heavier bell and the lighter bell will sort it self out.

What's the goal with doing that?

I personally wouldn't. I do not like alternating things every two weeks, I have not had good results doing that.

A while back Geoff sent out an email talking about how to combine Giant and King Sized Killer (snatch-only plan):

1. Alternate blocks - 1 month on Giant, 3 weeks on KSK.
2. Alternate days - Week 1: Day 1 Giant, Day 2 KSK, Day 3 Giant; Week 2: Day 1 KSK, Day 2 Giant, Day 3 KSK
3. Split Days - halve the time for each (10-15 min for Giant and 10 min for KSK) and do them both in the same day, with 5-10 min of rest between transitions.

While this was particularly about Giant and KSK, you could use it is a guide as for incorporating ballistics.

For whatever it's worth.....back in the later fall and early winter I tried some A+A snatching on off days and sometimes same days as training.......it didn't go too well for me. I was pretty beaten up. For me at this age it's one or the other, not both. I think I'd rather put the full focus on one project at a time. The alternating of ksk and Giant the way it was described doing a full block of Giant work for 4 weeks then 3 weeks of snatches sounds tremendous

It's a tremendous idea, especially after you get into 1.1 and 1.2. That's a lot of volume every single week. The wear and tear can start beating you down. I firmly believe the real magic is in the 6-9 schemes, but 8 weeks of that is a killer. I found my 30 minute workouts became 20. There were no more deload weeks. Do 6-7 sets of 8 or 9 and call it a day.

Plus the snatches will make your conditioning even better! No more running out of gas from double cleans.

It would be similar to ROTK, just way easier to remember programming

Best I can say is give it a try if you're not finding the answers you want. There is a lot to be said about doing a thing and then saying "oof that was a bad idea!" or "wow that worked really well!"

I do not have good results alternating a couple weeks one thing and a couple another. I would rather find a way to combine them in the same day or alternate discrete sessions. It is likely all mental, but it's a mental I haven't been able to kick, and haven't felt the need to really try. So I'm probably not the best one to give advice...

What about ROTK programming do you find overly complicated? Have you thought about streamlining that instead? It was alternating blocks of grinds (squat/press/deadlift) and ballistics (C&J) with Heavy Light Medium days. Two weeks Giant / two weeks KSK doesn't seem to simplify it so much as remove the squat and deadlift.

Just curious if anyone has tried using Geoff's Barbell Bolt On with the Giant? He programmed BB Bolt On to be done in conjunction with MKM, which is a series of acid bath programs. Seems if it would pair well with that it would pair well with the Giant. Anyway, just curious if anyone has tried it and if so, what were the results.

I’m really enjoying the Strong! Teaching videos. I’m going to keep practicing the cues and run the Giant in about a month or so, still not sure I want to run with 1 bell or 2. I did a 10 RM test the other day with double 24’s. Strength wise I thought it was pretty easy but the volume was alot and I ran out of gas at the end. Lungs and grip were the 1st to get shaky, shoulders could have kept going. I’m 6’4” 270 lbs so I probably should be using 32’s however I think I’m going to run with the 24’s until my work capacity catches up.

No doubt you'll be rocking the 32s soon. Just like developing "sea legs" on a boat kettlebells have their own groove to get used to. It'll come right back!

I’m a year into bells, not in as good shape as you and love both the giant and strong. Awesome, and feels like money for jam, just steady progress without killing your self every session.
