Are there any deadlift lift resources that you guys like? @Anna C I'm tagging you on here since the program you recommended by @aciampa has deadlifts. Ideally I would go get a form check (which I plan to do) but I'd like to start educating myself with tutorials and visual aids.

Take the StrongFirst barbell course - best resource there is and, unlike other sources of instruction, this one is based StrongFirst principles.

Thank you Steve. I would love to but the time frame for the locations that I can drive to don't work. And that pretty much does me in for the year.

Consider a SFL coach in your area, and then follow up with a PlanStrong training plan. Works for me!

@Ryan T the deadlift is the crux of my issue with StrongFirst barbell lifting. Although I enjoyed and thought highly of my course attendance (1-day barbell course and 3-day SFL, both in 2017), there are virtually NO resources out there for others to learn what is taught, unless you go in person or hire an SFL coach with a really good memory for how to teach it. I actually have not found the SFL methods to be very transferrable/teachable to my students. In contrast, I believe that 5-step deadlift process taught by Starting Strength and illustrated in Alan Thrall's videos linked above by @Kettlebelephant are excellent, and foolproof. I've taught the deadlift this way many times and it works every time for every student. There are tons of other Starting Strength resources out there; articles, podcasts, videos, etc. I love it myself and have made a lot of progress with my deadlift since I started using it for my lifting. So.. just be aware of the choice in method because there are some differences. You kind of have to choose to do it this way, or choose not to and try to do a more pure StrongFirst way. Either way, we can help guide you, but though the cues and steps will be different.

Thanks @Anna C. There is no SFL instructors anywhere that I can find at any distance from me.

I'll check out the videos from above. Thanks!

I live in Ukraine. No SFL coaches anywhere near. No prospects of attending a course either.
What are the best compromise options in this case?

Senior SFG @Hector G has a good guide. You have to put your email in the site and he sends a download link immediately.

I liked reading it and it will probably be the catalyst for me switching to sumo. But I’m not a deadlift expert by any means so can’t offer an informed opinion. I can say he is strong (closing in on 700lbs without being a powerlifting specialist).

Strong As Hec

There are on-line options for sessions to learn and work on DL coaching (and basically any other exercises and modalities as well) - so you can work with an SFL without having one in your area.

You searched for deadlift | StrongFirst

There are articles and info here on the website.

As to the video recommended - I watched the video and while there are a couple of things I would do differently (and they do not cover breathing, tension, wedging etc...) I found some similarities.

This is a good resource.
Deadlifts - How to Tug like a Pro

“At the end of the day, any lift you want to do you have to just get stronger; so don't overthink this too much. It seems that the current infatuation with people is to treat all training like they are Olympic lifts. Ya know, "technique is EVERYTHING". And while it's nice to have good technique it's great to have strong lifts. At some point, you gotta add some weight and get strong.”

Jim Wendler

I like that quote. I like guys like Wendler, Wenning, Kaz, Bill Star, Rippetoe, Josh Bryant, Zac Even Esh, old school no nonsense guys.

Progress slow, stick to the basics, and just spend a lot of time with the bar in your hands. As you get stronger your technique will develop.

I like a simpler approach. You can read articles and watch videos, but you just have to gain experience. At some point you just have to get stronger.

I have never had an issue teaching the barbell DL to any of my clients or patients. The way it is taught at the SFL Cert/Course is the way I teach it to them with no concerns or issues of being able to be used properly.

Brett mentioned above there are articles on the SF website. Please use the link to find them.

From a recent post I posted on a another thread on this forum: There are many different methods that an athlete/lifter can choose from to move the barbell. The StrongFirst method is built on Pavel's and my experience over the years. My experience is from 20+ years of powerlifting along with coaching athletes for 30 years, in addition to being a chiropractic physician for the last 24 years. The StrongFirst method will not only get you strong, but in a safe and effective way.

@Dr. Michael Hartle @Brett Jones @CraigW I have read several of the articles. Thanks so much for the suggestions. Are both sumo and conventional stances taught? I'm assuming there isn't an actual preference between the two but what works best for the physiology of the athlete or perhaps sport-specific application?

@Tirofijo I went through Hec's book. As you said he teaches the sumo deadlift. In his book he indicates that regardless of the stance the principles of the lift are the same. So is he teaching the same methodology as SFL? I had watched most of his video on the deadlift before picking up the ebook which appears to be almost word for word with some of his comments/cues in the video. Which is great of course.

As always when I ask for help so many people jump in to give guidance and resources. Thank you to all. I will go through the rest of the videos and see what commonalities I can pick up. And... start posting my progress in my log!

Sorry, I've not had any training on SFL methodology. Can't answer.

I would assume that Hector is teaching SFL style.

More after vacation

If you can push back your intentions regarding deadlift it might be worth the wait. Hector is compiling a comprehensive course regarding the deadlift and will publish it in the near future.

@Hector G :
Maybe you would like to say a few words regarding this topic?
