The other issue with aging is normally you would have gained more mileage and likely more niggles and injuries.

When it comes to sport and athletic ability I also believe it brings trepidation - people tend to be more weary and less bullish as you age. This tends to halt progesss as they are beaten in the head rather than the body

Good points. Every soft tissue injury results in some scar tissue. I've had a few. An injury like a ruptured disc just never really heals. I have a ruptured disc in my lower back and it's not a little one either. For me, the trepidation is because of the back injury. I hate saying "I'm too old to do that." However, I will say "That won't be good for my back." I'm sure some young guy would argue that this is just a different way of saying "I'm too old," but disc injuries can happen even to relatively young guys, and I've seen a few younger guys back away from something because of their backs.
