Something I found when it came to running and military work was , for me at least, sprint work was the key. I programmed a steady diet of 200, 400 and 800 meter sprints, 2-3 days a week. Sprint might be the wrong word as I weigh 240lbs but I ran hard, as hard as I could. All the sprint work helped greatly when it came to longer runs of 3-5 miles. While not the fastest guy out there I could hang with the pack and I was in my late thirties at the time. Rucking came easy as I was already pounding my legs and lungs. I just made sure not to over load leg work when doing sprints. Not unlike the WTH effect swings have on a lot of us.
