Hugo Cranswick

profilephoto01-0011G00000eMf3KQASFormer martial artist and strength enthusiast, Hugo has been with the school of strength since 2018 where he earned his first StrongFirst certification, SFG Instructor.

Since then, Hugo has taken every opportunity to deepen his understanding of the world of strength training, learning from Master SFG Shaun Cairns and Senior Team Leader Piers Kwan, attending and teaching certifications in Australia, India and Singapore.

Hugo also completed The Beast Tamer Challenge in 2022 during a SFG1 certification at his gym in Newcastle, Australia.

On the gym floor, Hugo has now taken his Powerlifting training “seriously”. After working closely with Shaun, Hugo won his first meet and has realistic ambitions to compete nationally in the coming years.

When not teaching abroad, Hugo spends most of his time operating and teaching at his gym, Valkyrie Gym (founded in 2017) where he and his team have cultivated a space where “Strength is for everyone”.

I had the opportunity to learn from Hugo during the SFG 1 certification in Chennai in March'24. He is a patient and encouraging teacher who pushes to help you understand the 'why' and 'how' rather than just saying 'do'. Listening to his story on how strength and SFG shaped his life was inspiring and this Beast Tamer was a gentle teacher that I cherished learning from. Keep making people stronger Hugo.

Complete a a technical session with Hugo to deepen my knowledge on the skill set for the prep for the SFG2 cert, and I walked away very satisfied with the quality and standard of the session.

I came to Hugo’s gym as a casual athlete 2 years ago with a glimmer of hope to one day accomplish SFG1 certification. From day one he made sure I was on the path to making a “maybe” a reality. His ability to teach quality technique and nurture the learning of a diverse range of people is evident in every member of his gym. His diligent programming and skills training allowed me to achieve SFG1 certification in 2022 and I am months away from completing SFG11.

Working with Hugo to achieve my SFG1 was a life-altering experience. His skills in coaching are deeply considered and practical, and good communication comes naturally to him. Hugo is an exceptional coach and lovely person. His knowledge of and dedication to kettlebell and strength training are exceptional. He helped coach me to my SFG2 as an assistant on the certification weekend. I would highly recommend him to anyone, from beginner to advanced, who wants to swing bells like a badass!
