Larry’s Logs

Today’s practice: 9/6/21
First day running my own PE program, went for a 3 mile run on my lunch break. Cuz if your not running in your lunch as a pe teacher wtf are you really doing ?!

Today’s practice: 9/9/21
Soju and Tuba day 15: 4x3@75#. All in all pretty good. Had one stall/grind on each side in total, but i was able to finish them all. I’m going to set the goal of 5 reps each side for my test day, but will of course go for 6.
Did a 3.6 mile run between classes and after school programs.

Yesterday’s practice: 9/12/21 14 mile run, little low energy, but solid overall.
Today’s practice: 9/13/21 5 mile run to school with a three hour team building outdoor adventure class break, then another 5 mile run home. Both were really great runs along the river, love that route.
24 miles over a two day period really adds up, i feel like i ran a race, prolly back off for a day or two, maybe get a soju and tuba session in.

Soju and tuba day 16; 5x3@75#
pretty terrible session. A lot of grinds, stalls, and straight up failures. Likely should have had one recovery day before this but I’m a dummy. I feel like my cns is still overloaded from all the miles I’ve logged in passed couple of days. I think i learned from it though, both when to rest and some cues on how to really grind through crappy grinds and stalls.

Larry are you running at a sub 10 min mile pace?

Training update: 9/18/21
Was running with the pup friday night and we almost got hit by a car. Guy came to a screeching halt and scared the life put of my poor girl. I changed directions to chase after her and immediately sprained my ankle, she was so scared she kept running and encountering more and more cars to scare her more. So i ran on my sprain for 2 miles and made it absolutely terrible. Dog was missing for 36 hours and i was quite useless during it all. Wonderful citizen found her and waited with her till we got there. She was finally exhausted enough to stop and eat his treats. Glad she’s back, praying my ankle heals in time to get back to some sort of training in time to make it to the marathon. Going to just take it super easy though cuz it’s pretty jacked up right now.

Damn Larry, sounds similar to my doggy experience last weekend. A full grown male German Shepherd came at Buddha and I yanked his leash to pick him up and turn him away from the attack. I could hear and feel my shoulder rip.. the dog stopped the attack but it was too late, damage was done. This is the third injury I've had to it in the last few months.. it's gettin old :/

i know bret, I’m sorry man…semi good news for me though is that mine is a break on the 5th metatarsal. Better diagnosis than the severe sprain i thought i had. I’m going to have to sit out the Chicago marathon, but i have one planned for memphis in December and my doc thinks i should he good by then. Even better news is that my doc trains and is running the Chicago marathon himself! Going to take it easy for the rest of the week easy (if you call getting around and teaching on crutches easy), then start a some sort of kneeling/sitting program. I’m thinking presses and kneeling suitcase swings to keep me active and sane. Hope you are all well and i am praying/sending good vibes to your shoulder. Dog is sore and maybe suffering a little ptsd with cars but is otherwise fine. 9BAC4593-A642-4FDF-AE6F-7B5358FDC2A9.jpeg

Well... that does suck, though knowing what you're facing is hugely better than not. My brain goes to work around ideas right away, I like the swings idea.. maybe you can kneel on a couple benches with towels for padding and do the swings in between the benches? If feet hang over the back you won't be able to to stress the fracture very easily?
I think moderate weight get-ups to seated position may be possible too. Do you have access to a rower? Pushing off heels to row should be ok so long as you don't go ape nut on it? I would also do a ton of pushups off the knees.. anything to keep moving. **edit: you can also use a block with some padding and lay shins across the block for push-ups.. many possibilities there, TRX would come in handy also. I think pul-ups would definitely be on the menu for me.
You can probably do segmental rolling once things settle a bit, as well as dead bugs, bird dogs, thread the needle, cat camels, cobras.. OS rocking maybe with feet flat and toes extended? Many supine yoga moves and stretches are possible too.

Those are just quick off the top of my head, I think you have options. Swimming is probably going to be ok later in recovery.. at any rate, sorry to see you hobbled, luckily it's only a temporary setback.

Shoulder recovery work is going pretty steadily, hopefully after some months I'll be back to where I was.

All good ideas but i need minimalism. I used to go to a ymca but now i iust have my bells and pull-up bar on the enclosed backporch. My arms and shoulders are starting to feel the crutching accumulation. So I’m thinking i need a pull as well. Pull ups are the obvious answer to that current imbalance. I’m toying with the idea of a kneeling ROP program, with gtg pullups. Doc said i could bike maybe using heels too.

After my third day back on the job and crutching around all day, i think all I’m going to be able to manage is dead hangs and minimal pull ups. My arms are pretty toast right now.

I'm interested to see what strength gains you make in upper body.. sub-scap, lats and triceps come to mind.. among others.

Doing ok @Bret S., thank you! I’ve just been very tired from crutching around all day and haven’t been doing any intentional practice outside of some gtg hands and single maybe double pull-ups. I have been indulging in a lot of extra sleep and calories, including mid day naps.
Yesterday was my first lifting session as i messed around with my 9kg adjustable bell i found in the garbage over the summer. Kneeling snatches actually feel really good with it and I’m thinking about using it for a bottoms up/kneeling ROP to get me through this rehab. Shoulders, chest, and core all feel very strong and big from crutching. I feel as though I’m getting big hand/forearm/elbow gains as well.
Hope you all are doing well. I should be posting now that I am more myself again.

Hope you recover quick. Take care

Energy is up so I’m going for it. 6 rounds of kneeling snatches @24#, 10L switch hands 10R. Take a break and then do 5 bottoms up presses each side. Thought I’d record my kneeling snatches, pardon the poor angle and mess, everything in my house is a mess rn and my space is not conducive to filming. Kneeling snatches
