My neighbor coordinated a 5k for his rotary club and I figured, let's do this, all because of everything I'd read and learned about the WTH effect. I suppose it was my specific intent to test the effect, so without running a single mile I "prepared" for the race by doing my usual training of swinging, snatching, pressing, deadlifting, cleaning, etc. I wanted to place in my age group—40-49—and came in second. I wanted to place in the top 30 overall and came in 19th. I wanted to run it in 30 minutes or less and timed 28:28. The recovery wasn't as painless as the run, but I was very happy to experience the WTH effect firsthand, and to be able to share it with my students, especially as I was never the fastest when I was younger, and this run felt powerful.
